Public Relations and Social Media




Ever since Public Relations was started almost 100 years ago, the industry has been constantly changing and improving with the help of new ways for companies to communicate with their clients, customers and the media. There are many ways for a company to communicate with their people, like through press releases, news conferences etc.. However, there has been a new way of doing things for these companies that is transforming the industry, and that is through the use of social media. Social media has been changing the way we all do things in business, but especially for Public Relations. Since a large part of the population is on social media, corporations can easily share their message with not just their existing customers, but with potential new customers well.

A social media platform that can explain how this works is a platform that I personally use, and that is Twitter. The reason why many corporations use Twitter for their Public Relations is that it allows the business to interact and connect with customers on a day to day basis. When a customer begins to follow a business on Twitter, they have the ability to comment on any of their tweets that the certain business puts out. This can range anywhere from questions about the company or just commenting on something that the customer liked. Another reason why Twitter is a great source for companies is that it can be a good way to handle conflict resolution. For example, if a rumor starts to surface about a company doing something that isn't accurate or true, that certain company can use Twitter to diffuse the rumor and explain what happened. Another very good and important reason why Twitter is very good for Public Relations is that the platform is free to use. This makes the platform even more accessible to companies because they don't have to spend money in order to get their message out. Social media has become an important part of the Public Relations industry, and Twitter isn’t the only platoform that can be used. There are so many other platforms that can be used by corporations. These platforms include Facebook, Instagram, and Linked In. Companies have the ability to reach so many new people and spread their messeage, all for free.
